Ocean
jasper is a wonderful jasp-agate found off the coast of the island of
Madagascar, just east of southern Africa. The story is that outcrops of this
jasper jut into the shoreline and that it must be mined at low tide. It is
transported out by boat. Ocean jasper is famous for it's "eyes", or
more exactly it's "orbs", and sometimes shows some fortification
banding. It is also famous for it's incredible range of colors. Almost any color
you can think of has been found in this great display and lapidary material.
Pieces up to several fee across or larger are found, and the pattern and color
can vary greatly in each piece.
